Having been a fan of Frisky and Mannish since my student days in Edinburgh, I could not have been more excited to see Frisky return to the Fringe after a decade away. The cult cabaret duo first made their name with whip smart mash ups and genre bending parodies that became a Fringe sensation. Now Frisky steps out on her own with Frisky’s Reshuffle and proves the wait was worth it. This is a dazzling showcase of vocal versatility and comic invention, reinventing songs we all know in ways that feel fresh, mischievous and jaw droppingly clever.
The show kicks off with Like a Virgin. Impressive enough on its own, before it suddenly swerves into a polka. From there the audience steers the evening through 1920s jazz, reggae, country and even drum and bass. Each performance is completely unique, with the setlist and styles chosen in the moment by the crowd, making every night a one off musical adventure. The four piece band are extraordinary, their virtuosity and quickfire improvisation keeping pace with Frisky’s imagination at every turn.
The highlights are unforgettable: a smoky jazz Gangsta’s Paradise, Mr Brightside reborn as funk, Wannabe transformed into a soaring aria, and My Humps delivered with Adele like sincerity. The sheer variety and inventiveness on display is astonishing.
Between songs, Frisky’s effortless charisma and razor sharp banter keep the room buzzing. She nominates a playful “audience leader” and folds us all into the fun, never once straying into the sort of participation that makes you cringe. It is joyful, generous entertainment, brimming with wit and warmth.
This is exactly the kind of Fringe comeback that reminds you why live performance matters: bold, brilliant and utterly unmissable. The festival feels richer for Frisky’s return, and let us hope she makes it a regular one.
