Following a string of sold out, award winning Australian seasons including a five star run at the Sydney Opera House, Yentl arrives in London this spring for its international premiere at the Marylebone Theatre. The bold new adaptation from Kadimah Yiddish Theatre will play a strictly limited season from 6 March to 12 April 2026, with a press night on 11 March.

The production has now announced its final casting. Ashley Margolis joins the company as Avigdor, with Claire Morrissey and Michali Dantes announced as understudies. They join previously revealed cast members Amy Hack as Yentl, Genevieve Kingsford as Hodes, and Evelyn Krape as The Figure. Kandice Joy will understudy the roles of Yentl and Hodes.

Ashley Margolis’s extensive stage credits include The Shark Is Broken, The Band’s Visit at the Donmar Warehouse, Bad Jews in the West End, and the original UK tour of Beauty and the Beast. His screen work includes Silent Witness, Brassic, and Anne Frank: A Life in Hiding. Claire Morrissey trained at the Royal Academy of Music and has appeared in productions including Gaslight, Happy Days directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, and the long running NewsRevue. Michali Dantes is a British actor musician trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, with credits including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cable Street, and Dick Whittington at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch.

Staged bilingually in Yiddish and English, Yentl reclaims Isaac Bashevis Singer’s original short story in a darker and more transgressive form than many audiences may expect. Set in an 1870s Polish shtetl, it follows a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to study Jewish scripture, igniting a powerful exploration of faith, gender, desire and tradition.

The production is directed and co written by Gary Abrahams, with co writers Galit Klas and Elise Hearst. Creative credits include set and costume design by Dann Barber, lighting by Rachel Burke, and original composition and sound design by Max Lyandvert, with Yiddish translation by Professor Rivke Margolis.

Director Gary Abrahams describes the production as a return to Singer’s original spiritual and supernatural roots, invoking a world of dybbuks, demons and ghosts, and positioning London as a natural home for the work’s international debut.

Founded in 1911, Kadimah Yiddish Theatre is the oldest theatre company in Australia and one of only a handful of contemporary bilingual Yiddish English theatre companies worldwide. The London premiere of Yentl forms a major highlight of its centenary year.

The production is presented in the UK by Wild Yak Productions in association with Counterminers CIC.

Yentl runs at the Marylebone Theatre from 6 March to 12 April 2026. Tickets are on sale now via the Marylebone Theatre website.
