Bombshell has an absolutely wild premise. Three Vegas showgirls are determined to make the fight for the environment sexy on the final night of their inherited club, Club Fistfight. Scarlett, Jane and Eliza are armed with glitter, killer heels and a plan to seduce the audience into caring about the planet. Their cabaret is big, brash and dripping with camp excess, but as the evening spirals towards chaos, a shocking secret pushes one of them to take extreme action.
Is it entertaining? Yes. Did I love it? Absolutely. Did I fully understand it? Not entirely. Did I care? Not one bit. For the whole hour I was hooked, watching the three showgirls kick, jig, and dance their way into my heart, balancing moments of wild absurdity with flashes of real emotion.
The piece springs from a global creative team. Madison Mayer pens the words, Aila Swan crafts the music, and Emory Kemph shapes the staging. Together, they also step into the heels of the Bombshells themselves, radiating charisma and clearly having the time of their lives on stage. Their chemistry is infectious, bouncing between slapstick chaos, playful audience interaction and moments that catch you off guard.
Some of the biggest laughs come when they tackle the minefield of dating, or when one performer recalls her father urging her to shake her stuff on stage, just like her mother. It is these ridiculous, larger-than-life moments that keep the energy high and the audience grinning.
It is part slapstick, part heartfelt, and part unashamedly political, all wrapped in an hour of glitter-fuelled chaos that never lets up. Beneath the sequins there is a sharp reminder that we really should stop drowning the world in plastic, but Bombshell makes its point with such wit and wild energy that you barely notice you are being taught something. It is bold, brash and completely unforgettable. And for any men reading this, I dare you to sit in the front row. Perve.
